Butcher heifers again in demand and sold to 220.5ppk for a shapely Limousin x heifer from Mr FT Walton, Flotterton to a local butcher.

OTM. A much improved entry this week with a lovely show on offer. Trade would be slightly dearer, especially the better end.

The sale topped at £1495.31 for a fantastic Pure Limousin cow from the renowned Swarland herd from M/s A&D Proctor.

On Friday Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale offered a catalogued entry of 872 head of store cattle representing a significant rise on the year.

With a good crowd of buyers at the ringside throughout the duration of the sale all classes were sought after and trade continued in an improved direction as seen earlier in the month.

Stronger, forward sorts peaked at £1420 for an outstanding Limousin cross bred steer at 20 months from Messrs Clark, Paxton Dene who sold a super run of similar types. Heifers in this age bracket peaked at £1270 for an upstanding pure bred Charolais cross at the same age from noted pedigree breeder Chris Curry, Low Burradon, Rothbury.

Although not a dedicated native breed week Angus cross cattle saw strong demand and peaked at £1290 for an older bullock from Messrs Metcalf, Fairley, Kiln Pit Hill and a younger type at 14 months from Jim & Helen Gledson, Buteland soared to £1270; their run of 18 cracking steers, all by the black bull averaged just one pound short of £1100 throughout at 13-14 months.

Continental cross yearling sorts peaked at £1270 a smart and shapely British Blue cross bullock from Messrs Kellet, Errington whilst James Forster, East Wharmley topped his run of well-bred, well-presented Charolais cross yearlings with a sublime ginger heifer that rattled up to a highly satisfactory £1210.

A quality show of cattle at ten months of age and under were also presented and these; the majority from upland holdings that are ideally suited for turnout sold exceptionally well. Leading was a tremendous limousin cross steer from Allendale based father and son Brian & Angus Tailford, Beacon Rigg which scaled to £1075 with Andrew Swallow, Dukesfield Hall sold a smart pair or red steers at £1060. Heifers in this bracket peaked at £1015 for a smart Limousin lady from Craig Armin, Tanfield Lane with another selling to £1005 from noted Limousin bull breeders Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall.

This week saw our opening sale of Ewes and Lambs and there was plenty of interest with grass starting to grow.

Sale was topped at £220 for 10 Texel x gimmers with their twin lambs at foot from M/s J Reed & Son, High Eshells.

Annual consignor, M/s C Everitt, Jolly Body, sold 4crop Beltex x ewes with twin lambs at foot £195 twice.

Demand seems to be growing and more outfits could have easily been sold.
