On Friday Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a smaller entry of 216 catalogued head of mainly beef bred types and fittingly on The Bards birthday not a ‘wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim’rous beastie’ was in sight.

Most classes were marginally dearer on the week, buoyed on perhaps by a quality show and a shortage of numbers. A good crowd were at the ringside and the majority of vendors went home satisfied.

The day got off to a great start with a quality offering from regular consignor and strong supporter of the Hexham ring; John Davison, Lough Green who topped the sale with the very first animal sold on the day. A super, square and lengthy charolais cross lady at 18 months this one attracted great interest and flew to £1340 leading a pen of four which sold well to average £1157 throughout.

Seldom seen on the report not only was the leading beast a heifer but so too was the next; a home-bred Limousin cross at the same age from father and son Chris & Andrew Johnson, trading as Messrs Clark, Paxton Dene. The Longhorsley based pair also sold the dearest bullock on the day for the same price and were duly rewarded for their efforts through the store ring at Hexham having recently returned after an absence of twelve years.

Equalling Messrs Clark’s high ranking prices was the top priced heifer in a run of seven with style and substance from Johnny Moralee, Hard Riding, Bardon Mill who saw great interest in his well-bred pen of cattle at 18-20 months, a number of which were sought after as breeding replacements by noted herdmaster’s and returned an average just one pound short of Twelve hundred per head.

A cracking run were brought out of County Durham by another father & son team; George Herdman and George Jnr for their weekly consignment at this time of year from Lunns House, Consett. Limousin steers peaked at £1300 twice whilst heifers hit £1145 and saw a run of six and four average £1188 throughout.

Well-bred yearling types also saw increased demand and these peaked at £1260 for two separate bullocks that sold to the same purchaser for noted Blonde d’Aquitaine enthusiasts; Messrs English, Brownsleazes, Wark who also saw their best heifer cash at £1180. Pedigree Limousin breeders Messrs Nixon, Stotsfold came forward with a smart run of their commercial bullocks and these peaked at £1250 for a smart pair whilst their pen of twelve sold well to average £1131 per head.

Native breed cattle were also in demand peaking at £1290 for a big Angus cross steer from Alec Bissett, Middle Dukesfield with a Hereford cross at £1270 from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh.

A level pen of five Angus cross heifers bred from dairy mothers at 17-18 months of age sold well for local regular supporters Messrs Faill, Hedley West, Stocksfield at £890 whilst a pen of four hill suckler bred Angus bullock calves at 9-10 months that had travelled a distance from The Ingram Valley, Wooler with producers Messrs Wilson saw a great reward at £940 each.
