On Friday 11 January Hexham & Northern Marts held their second sale of the year and offered a sound catalogued entry of 438 head of store cattle.

A greatly increased entry on the week saw a larger crowd at the ringside and all classes dearer again. Leading the sale this week were not one but three charolais steers; the first at 22 months was brought out by breeder and weekly consignor John Carpenter, Rare Dene, Cornsay, County Durham who saw the hefty bullock quickly rise to change hands at £1390. This was followed a little later in the sale by a pair of equally well-grown and square steers brought to Hexham from The Coquet Valley at 18 months of age which realised the same tariff for vendor Jimmy Walton, Flotterton, Rothbury.

The same vendor also sold a cracking offering of six heifer sisters to the aforementioned bullocks which, in two lots of three were drawn to perfection and sold at £1300 and £1310 consecutively to two determined purchasers based near Barnsley and Huddersfield respectively.

Middle and younger aged cattle were also in demand with buyers keen for all classes. Messrs Athey, High Loveladyshield saw the peak of this trade for a superb Limousin cross bullock which received attention from all around the ring and quickly travelled to settle at £1380 with the hammer falling in favour of a locally based finisher.

The largest run of cattle on the day fell within this age bracket and were brought the short distance to Hexham Mart from West Nubbuck Farm by noted breeder Lewis Forster. Using both Limousin and Charolais sires Mr Forster saw his ‘red’ sired cattle peak at £1200 for steers and £1170 for heifers whilst those by the ‘white’ bull peaked at £1165 for heifers and £1150 for steers. The £1150 price tag was realised twice for charolais cross steers, bred from top quality Limousin cross mothers, the second was for a very well-grown and shapely 8 month old steer which topped the youngest age class; those at ten months and younger. Mr Forster enjoyed a buoyant trade throughout and saw his 21 steers average £1058 and 13 heifers return at £946.

Messrs Thompson, East Unthank also sold cattle in the youngest age class and saw their best Blue cross steer hit £1045 whilst a Limmy at the same 9 months of age reached £1025 for the Haltwhistle based family.

Entries are invited for next week’s inaugural ‘New Year’ prize show and sale which has introduced by the company and will be kindly sponsored by Blackshaws of Alnwick. Classes are simple and consist of two for cattle under 18 months of age; steers and heifers and two for cattle over 18 months of age; also steer and heifers. The latter is designed to attract stronger, forward types not typically seen in the show ring whilst the former will undoubtedly see traditional ‘show calves’ presented.
