On Friday November 14, Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of prime livestock at Hexham.

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a good entry of 799 head which included 179 head of native breed types for the monthly special sale of such sorts as well as 302 spring born suckled calves for the traditional second ‘Bellingham’ sale.

The older stronger continental cross offering sold well with the very best selling to a dearer trade than last week however once again secondary, weathered types are increasingly harder to cash. These topped at £1370 for a superb Limousin cross bred heifer at 18 months from John Davison, Lough Green, Langley whilst steers peaked at £1325 for a similarly well shaped Limousin steer from Martin White, Steel Hall, Slaley at the same age.

The native offering was topped at £1300 by an older Angus cross heifer from Selby and Alan Robson, Yatesfield, Otterburn whilst steers by the black bull peaked at £1250 from Peter Charleton, Little Harle, Kirkwhelpington. A super pen of well-presented steers at 16 months by the Beef Shorthorn bull sold well for Messrs Dodd & Wise, Sillywrea; also in the Langley parish and peaked at £1080 to average £1024 for five sold.

A sound entry of over three hundred freshly weaned spring born suckled calves were sold in the second part of the sale and these attracted a different clientele to the ringside. As with the older stores these too saw the best of the offering sell well however lesser, later born types were difficult to place and certainly easier than the main sale held a month ago. Leading this section was a steer from Messrs Dent, Beamwham, Haydon Bridge that peaked at £955 at 9 months of age whilst heifers topped at £880 from regular consignors Messrs Storrow, Willimoteswick, Bardon Mill. A number of buyers had travelled long journeys for this class of cattle and many will winter at new, distant homes all over the UK.

Breeding Cattle

A small selection of Beef Breeding cattle were offered for sale on behalf of two longstanding customers. The first was a herd dispersal on behalf of Robert Ridley, Low Huntwell, Sparty Lea and saw his Limousin and Blue cross cows out of dairy mothers and due to calve to the Limousin bull over the next few months sell well at the end of the day. These peaked at £2150 for a big square Limousin cross second calver due mid-January which sold to near neighbours Messrs Fairless, White Hill. The second offering was that of six stock cows that had just fallen out of ‘sync’ for Messrs Thompson, Allotment Farm, Weardale and these too sold well peaking at £1900 for a powerful, black third calver with a smart june born bull calf at foot that will be staying in ‘The Dale’ with Nigel & Kirsty Peart, Weeds Farm, Westgate.
