On Friday, there was the weekly sale of store cattle, which peaked at £1390 for an 18 month old British Blue cross steer from Michael Pickworth, Dotland Park, Hexham.

The same consignor also topped the heifer rankings with two cracking heifers at the same age which may well be put to the bull in future and these sold for £1300 each.

With weather having taken an obvious turn for the worse as we enter November herdmasters’ thoughts are now primarily concerned with winter housing, fodder and bedding stockpiles with the most prudent keen to avoid any unnecessary ‘passengers’ this winter.

This being the case it was only the best outfits selling beyond or in-line with vendor’s expectations and, as with the store cattle entry – any lesser types looked value for money.

At the weekly cast sheep sale, there were 2109 catalogued cast ewes and tups - a much larger show compared than last week. Heavier ewes slightly less money this week, but leaner feeding sorts maintained last week’s high rates.

There were 4858 lambs in the store lambs sale. Trade maintained last week’s competitive rates with 38 different buyers ringside and topped by a pen of tremendous Texel x tup lambs from M/s J Robson, Hepple Whitefield that realised £97. Breaking the £90 barrier was also a very smart pen of Dutch Texel x lambs from M/s BA & AM Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick that sold for £90.50

Topping the Mule section was M/s D&M Scott, Redesmouth Farm, Bellingham which sold for £74.
