Mr Alan Cowans, Philliphaugh, Selkirk made the trip down over the Carter Bar on a crisp, fresh, frosty morning to judge the Cheviot class and had to select his prize winners from a level entry of eight shearlings and aged rams and did so in an expert manner.

With the show concluded the sale began with the aforementioned hill classes and buyers were selective throughout with only the best of each breed sought after. On Friday, Hexham & Northern Marts at their final sale of store cattle in the month of October offered a sound entry of 744 head including an encouraging number of over 340 native breeds for the monthly special sale of such types.
As always the sale began with older, forward stores and this trade appeared marginally easier on the week however the best end continue to sell well. Topping the sale this week was a super hefty charolais cross steer that scaled to £1355 from Messrs Herron, Bensons Fell, Hexham at the upper end of the age spectrum. Two separate Limousin cross steers at 18 months of age came next at £1320, the first from Messrs Ridley, Shitlington Hall and the next from near neighbours Messrs Allgood, Nunwick.
Derek and Vincent Milburn, Holling Hill, Rothbury brought another great run of strong cattle to Hexham and saw them peak at £1305 and £1290 respectively for steers and heifers by the Charolais Bull, with 9 and 5 sold in total to average £1208 throughout.
On the special monthly native breed day this class was led by a tremendous run pf strong Angus cross bullocks brought to Hexham from Coquetdale by Chris and Janet Watmore, Holystone Estate ably assisted by stockman Stuart Buchannan. The run of 25 thumping black bullocks, all by registered Angus bulls peaked at £1280 and averaged £1232 throughout selling well to many return purchasers.
A smart offering of younger, yearling continental crosses were presented by Ken Ridley, Allenshields and his shapely Limousin crosses peaked at £1265 for steers and £1195 for heifers whilst averaging £1148 for five and £1128 for three respectively for the Blanchland based breeder.
In-line with the trade seen earlier in the month the best of each offering; native or continental bred is easily placed however continually leaner, secondary types have proven harder to cash. This is due in part to the requirement for both fodder and hard feeding to overwinter and finish hard summered cattle to advantage.
Producers with store cattle yet to reach the market are urged to contact our auctioneers who will be delighted to advise the best approach to maximise returns when selling such animals.
