FOLLOWING in his grandmother’s footsteps, a young Hexham pupil has had one of his first poems published in a children’s anthology.
Nine-year-old Patrick Storey is a pupil at Hexham East First School, and when his class took on a poetry project, he was keen to create a piece of his own.
What Patrick didn’t know was that he had inherited a poetic ability from his late grandmother, who had an anthology of her work published in 1994, before Patrick was even born.
The theme for the poetry was set as ‘the seasons’ and Patrick dedicated one verse to each season, describing the weather.
The young poet said: “I like winter best because of the snow!”
Patrick’s poem will now appear alongside work by other pupils in an anthology entitled Celebrating Seasons, to be published at the end of November.
An avid reader, Patrick is also a fan of Doctor Who, and although his favourite doctor is actor David Tennant, currently playing Hamlet in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production at Stratford, the youngster isn’t too keen on following his idol’s classical theatrical career – because he thinks Shakespeare is more his grandad’s kind of thing!
Patrick’s dad, David, said: “We have always encouraged Patrick to read and his grandmother loved books and writing poems; it looks like she has passed her talents on.”
