Fast track success for equine nurse

HELEN Lower (pictured right) has gained her equine veterinary nursing qualification – one of the first in the region to do so under a new fast track training system.

Until recently, equine nurse training had an indirect route to qualification via two years’ working with small animals followed by an extra year’s specialist training.

But The Royal College of Veterinary Nursing recognised equine nursing required specialist knowledge and training.

It responded with a tailored course designed to develop highly skilled nurses for what is regarded as a challenging area of veterinary medicine.

Helen joined the Bearl Equine Clinic in Stocksfield three years ago.

There she leads a team of four nursing assistants and works closely with Jonathan Wainwright, head of nurse training, to implement the in-house training programme.
