HEXHAM-BASED music charity Samling is offering a day of expert training in classical singing free-of-charge to talented youngsters.

Designed to give a taster of the wider Samling Academy programme, the workshops will take place on Saturday, February 13, on the outskirts of Newcastle. They are aimed at schoolchildren aged 12 to 17 in Years 8 to 12.

Artistic and executive director Karon Wright said: “We are hoping to discover young people in our schools who have talent and give them the opportunity to develop it by working with some of the best in the business.”

The workshops will be led by Caroline Dowdle, from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, singing teacher Miranda Wright, director and movement coach Pedro Ribeiro and award-winning pianist Ian Tindale.

Together they will guide participants through a group performance of the Humming Chorus from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly .

No previous experience of classical singing is required, just a good voice and some interest. Anyone wishing to take part should register by the end of today, with Mary Emmett on (01434) 602885.
