A CLASSIC action thriller will be shown at Hexham’s Forum Cinema on Sunday in support of a man on a £1m fund-raising mission.

Tim Hakim is gearing up to climb the notorious North face of the Eiger mountain in the Bernese Alps to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.

As part of Tim’s fund-raising prior to his climb, the community cinema in will be holding a one-off showing of the 1975 classic The Eiger Sanction.

The film was directed by, and stars, Clint Eastwood as a Government assassin brought out of retirement to track down a Soviet spy.

It also showcases the formidable mountain where Tim will be tackling a 13,000ft ascent over harsh rock and ice in March.

The climb is made even more challenging by the fact that in October 2013, Tim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s himself.

However, the 47-year-old is an experienced climber and is determined to use his skills to make a difference.

“Many of us grew up watching films on a Sunday afternoon, and what better way to revive the tradition than by watching an absolute classic and raise money for such a worthwhile cause at the same time,” he said.

“Thanks to the very generous support of close friends, who are funding the viewing, every penny raised from tickets sales and on the day fund-aising will go to Parkinson’s UK.”

On the two to three day climb, he’ll be accompanied by former Haydon Bridge resident and mountain guide Tim Blakemore, and the only rest points for the pair will be a couple of established bivouac shelters en route.

Suzanne McKenna, North-East and Cumbria regional fund-raiser at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Tim is just an amazing person! Not only is he planning an incredible feat by climbing the Eiger next year, he is constantly fund-raising and raising awareness of our work, and we are extremely grateful for everything he does.”

The Eiger Sanction will be showing at 5pm on Sunday and is rated 15.
