AN UNBEATEN season for Prudhoe High School’s U15 girls’ rugby team culminated in being crowned regional champions.

For the team of Year 10s, with the assistance of some Year 9 pupils, lifted the North-East and Cumbria Schools trophy after success at the championships, held in Ryton.

The girls went into the finals day in unstoppable form, having never tasted defeat in the four previous tournaments during the year.

And their winning run continued as they topped their group stage, beating Cumbrian teams Manor Park and Workington, as well as South Shields-based Harton Technical College.

They faced a grudge match with fierce rivals Queen Elizabeth High School, of Hexham, in the semi-finals, and they breezed past them to book a place in the final against Durham’s Teesdale School. It was a close-run thing, but two tries to nil meant that the plaque was heading over the Gateshead/ Northumberland border to take pride of place at Prudhoe.

PE teacher Gill Hudspith said: “It has been a very good season and the only one disappointment is that it is the first year the competition hasn’t gone on to the national final, and on to Twickenham! It is a great achievement and it just typifies the attitude of all the girls, not just in rugby but the many sports they play. They are one of the most talented bunch of girls we’ve had in the school, their attitude to sport is excellent and they are just a great bunch to work with.”
