ENTERING into the spirit of the Rugby World Cup, a team from Tynedale entered the Newcastle Rugby World Cup Fanzone touch rugby festival.

And the lads making up the U14 came close to victory, making the final before losing to their old nemesis Morpeth by tries to nil.

Fourteen youngsters from the Corbridge club turned up for the festival at St James' Park already having played Ryton on the morning.

In an event organised by Newcastle Falcons and with the emphasis mainly on fun and participation, Tynedale enjoyed local rivalry with teams from Ponteland and Houghton as they went through to the final by scoring of a total of 12 tries without conceding a point.

The festival shared venues with a Sikh wedding party - which all added to the atmosphere.

Team manager Gary Robson said: "Playing rugby with the iconic football stadium in the background and surrounded by wedding guests in ceremonial dress with Sikh music playing is probably not an experience they will ever get the chance to repeat!"
