TYNEDALE crashed to their heaviest defeat of the season as they were brutally battered into submission by a powerful Caldy outfit.

The Wirral side stormed to the top of the North Division One table with their 50-points plus haul, while Tynedale were left nursing a fresh crop of injuries which saw them finish the game with only 13 players fit enough to stay on the field.

Already without a host of key players, Tynedale gave as good as they got for an hour, before being pounded into the Mersey mud in the closing stages.

Caldy always had the edge in all departments, but Tynedale stuck at their task with terrier like tenacity.

Although blooded and off the field by the end, winger Henry Hadfield did well, making some great forays into the opposition defence

Richie Elliot, who had spells at both loose and tight head prop, put in a man of the match performance, and despite the absence of the talismanic prop Peter Southern for family reasons, the scrummage generally held up well against bigger opposition.

The blue scrum cap of Ben Haigh was never far from the action, and try scorer Jamie Blamire again caught the eye at hooker.

On his first start for the first XV, number nine Jack Outson did well, filling brother Matty’s shoes with aplomb for 65 minutes. before succumbing to injury.

Tynedale absorbed Caldy pressure in relative comfort early on, but struggled when the ball went wide, and they also lost lock Archie Erskine early on to injury,

Caldy took their lead with a fifth minute penalty, which was cancelled out three minutes later by the boot of Rob Parker.

Caldy’s powerful scrum gave them possession on 12 minutes leading to a try in the corner for the speedy Nick Royle, who added a second on 25 minutes to make it 13-3

Tynedale came back with another penalty, but Caldy’s third try from veteran scrum half John Broxson, converted by Rhys Hayes, gave them a comfortable half time lead at 20 -6.

Tynedale began the second half strongly, catching confident Caldy on the hop, and Blamire blasted over for a try with only a minute gone, Parker’s conversion taking the score to 20-13.

The score put Tynedale’s tails up, and led to a 10 minute period of constant pressure on the Caldy line.

Tynedale could and should have scored, but they blew an attacking scrum badly, and Caldy were able to breathe a massive sigh of relief as they weathered the storm.

On the hour, Caldy got their scoreboard moving again with a penalty, and then ripped Tynedale to shreds with a blistering grand finale of five tries in 15 minutes, including a penalty try, as the ball flicked between forwards and backs in mesmerising fashion.

After taking on five of the top six teams in the league in their opening seven games, Tynedale are hoping for some respite tomorrow, when second bottom Preston Grasshoppers are the visitors to Corbridge.

The Lancastrians had lost five in a row before an emphatic 62-27 success over bottom club Hinckley on Saturday.

Tynedale are hoping to have Matty Outson and Will Miller fit again, with fingers crossed for Ash Smith. The game kicks off at 3pm.
