AFTER their first opening day home defeat in a decade, Tynedale will be hoping to put matters right tomorrow when Huddersfield are the visitors to Corbridge.

The departure of last season‘s entire first choice front row - Alex Westgarth to Novocastrians, Dave Nelson to the Falcons and Sam White to Blaydon - left Tynedale a little lightweight up front against Leicester Lions, but fans were assured in Saturday’s programme notes that “two or three key” signings were imminent.

Head of rugby Andy Buist was “gutted” immediately after the game to have lost his first game in charge to the last kick of the match, but was pleased with many aspects of the performance of a new team both on and off the field.

He said:“ We did run out of steam a little bit towards the end of the second half, but some of the players missed out on the pre-season games and need a little more game time.”

Unlike Tynedale, tomorrow‘s opponents Huddersfield got their season off to a winning start with a comfortable 24-17 home victory over South Leicester.

They were in complete control when South Leicester scored two tries in the last 10 minutes to secure an unlikely losing bonus point.

The game kicks off at 3pm.

l Missing many players as the cricket season is still ongoing, Prudhoe and Stocksfield endured a drubbing at the hands of Chester-le-Street.

They returned with a heavy 89-8 drubbing to mull over, currently propping up the rest of the Durham and Northumberldand Three table after the opening weekend.

Ponteland’s step back up to D&N One started slowly as they lost heavily on their travels to Consett.

Theylost 56-7 to the Durham side who were in buoyant mood as they opened their new look club house.
