COMPETITIVE rugby returns to Corbridge this weekend as Tynedale's first XV begin their third season in National League Two (North) by entertaining Chester on Saturday.

The two sides are extremely well matched with two wins each over the previous two seasons, the points going to the away side on each occasion by the narrowest of margins.

Tynedale finished sixth in the table last season, one place behind the visitors, so a close game is in prospect.

Tyne warmed up for the new season with three games against top Scottish opposition, starting with a hammering against Melrose three weeks ago.

They then let slip half time leads in their following games as they lost 39-21 at home to Watsonians despite leading 21-14, which was followed up with a 42-26 defeat to Boroughmuir at the weekend after leading 14-0 at the break.

Despite the defeats, director of rugby Scott Lawson is confident for the season ahead.

He said: "I've been happy at how all the players have applied themselves during pre-season, and I'm looking forward to having a full and healthy squad to pick from.

"Following an improved season last year, we will be aiming to improve on that league place again this year. However, we need to continue to work hard as a whole squad as the demands of a 30-game league season require the services of many members."

Injuries to key players in the back division, including free scoring wing Oli Walker, exciting centre Rob Parker and fly half Dan Walker, means that Tynedale will not be at full strength for the game which kicks off at Tynedale Park at 3pm.
