MEMBERS of Tynedale Colts signed off from junior rugby by lifting the Northumberland County Cup.

Half of the squad of the U18 side made sure their last game before heading into senior rugby was a one to remember, defeating Berwick, a team they lost to earlier in the year, 29-5 in the final.

Playing on the large pitch at Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park, Berwick found it difficult to get out of their own half, in the early exchanges as Tyne kept the ball tight to the forwards.

After constant pressure, Tynedale gained the breakthrough with a penalty from Cam Grant followed by tries from Joe Hughes and Charlie Richards to give them a first half advantage of 15 points.

Berwick pulled a try back after the break but Tynedale’s defence remained solid, and it allowed them to push on and run away with it in the end.

Turning to fresh legs from the bench, they stepped it up with Hughes getting another try and Sam Collins rounded off the scoring, with Grant converting both efforts.

The cup victory is just rewards for a solid second half of the season for Tynedale.

Among the Colts crop making the step up to senior rugby is captain Jack Robson who has led by example throughout.

While they will be a miss, the team is in good shape and already looking forward to next season with the promise of exciting new arrivals to further strengthen the squad.
