A FINAL minute try denied the 14 men of Prudhoe and Stocksfield a losing bonus point as a group of non-cricketers headed to Seaham.

The Tyne Valley side managed to field a side for the trip despite missing key players to cricket, but they were thwarted in their pursuit of a first win of the new season as the hosts overturned a four point deficit to triumph 20-12.

Seaham started the game well and starved Prudhoe of possession in the early exchanges, but it was the away side which gained the upper hand. Stand-off Jannick Debil took a ball 15 metres out and ran directly at the Seaham defence, battering his way through to give his side a 5-0 lead with less than 10 minutes played.

A knee injury to Liam Dobbin then saw Prudhoe play the rest of the game a man down, but were at 13 for the next 10 minutes as Jack Robson was shown a yellow card for preventing a tap penalty.

The hosts did reduce arrears with a penalty, but they were unable to make their dominance over their depleted visitors count until they took the lead with a try with the last action of the first half.

It was the 14 men of P&S who came racing out of the traps after the restart to regain the lead, debutant full back Sam Causabrook taking the ball outside his own 22 metres and running through a flat footed home defence out wide. Luke Masters converted to leave P&S sitting pretty at 12-8.

Seaham roared back and gained two quick penalties which resulted in Nick Sherwin becoming the second Prudhoe player to spend time in the sin bin for being the offender in both incidents. The visitors were down to 12 men soon when a clumsy tackle from Debil earned him a yellow card, with his opponent also carded for retaliating.

When Sherwin returned to the field of play, an attempted intervention was viewed as a deliberate knock on and Seaham took advantage by running in a quick tap penalty from five metres which was converted for a three point lead before extending the lead late on.
