WHILE games between Prudhoe and Stocksfield and Seghill have been fairly even in the past few seasons, hosts Seghill stopped the trend with a comprehensive 44-14 triumph.

P&S were able to field a full side as they welcomed the return of their cricketing colleagues, although this was offset by the unavailability of influential captain Jack Liddle.

The away side travelled to Seghill with hopes they could take the spoil, but the hosts aren’t sitting joint top of the Durham and Northumberland League Three table for nothing as they put the pressure on P&S immediately.

Within two minutes, Seghill had the opportunity to open the scoring from a penalty. While it was sent wide, a second penalty three minutes later ensured they were three points to the good early on.

It got worse for Prudhoe on 12 minutes when a huge gap in the defence allowed an alert Seghill to burst through to score by the posts, the straight forward conversion extending the advantage to 10.

P&S were not allowing the hosts too many opportunities, though, and they were next on the scoresheet.

The long strides of Yannick Debil saw him break the line and he ran 20 metres to touch down and give his side hope.

This was short lived as the try was was cancelled out straight away as Seghill broke down the right to score wide out.

On the stroke of half time, the home scrum half was allowed to break a couple of tackles and run on to score his side’s third try as Seghill went into the interval 22-7 ahead.

P&S took the game to Seghill after the break and gained reward within five minutes when Steven Henderson made a half break before offloading to Debil who stretched his long arm over the line for his second try. Henderson again converted.

It looked as if Prudhoe were going to push on and claw a way back into the game but they were undone when a burst of speed up the right wing saw Seghill claim their bonus point for try number four, which was followed by a fifth just two minutes later.

The visitors refused to give in, but the efforts of the back three of Dan Wiley, Matt Nevin and Raj Kingman were not enough to stem the flow of wide ball to the speedy wings of Seghill as try number six came with 10 minutes to go.

There was one final blow for Prudhoe to take as Seghill’s wingers again showed their class, taking the final score to 44-14 with the final move of the game.

Seghill’s fellow table toppers Richmondshire are next up for P&S as they head to Stocksfield Cricket Club on Saturday for the 3pm kick off.
