PLAYERS from Kielder-based club Border Park and Ponteland worked off the turkey sandwiches and festive booze for an old-school rugby encounter.

The two teams managed to attract a total of 68 players to contest a friendly fixture held at Woolsington’s Druid Park two days after Christmas for the first of what looks set to be many meetings between the sets of players.

As part of Border Park’s recent revival since being rescued from extinction, the club have arranged a number of friendlies to keep the club going. They had played Northumberland U20 and Northumbria University’s Poly Warriors in recent weeks.

There has been great interest from local rugby players, both past and present, and the latest arrangement saw the Border boys link up with Durham and Northumberland outfit Ponteland.

A fantastic game transpired on a cold day, with around 150 spectators shouting on encouragement from the sidelines.

Ponteland narrowly edged the thrilling game 45-43, although the result was immaterial as all involved were keen to have a good, old fashioned game of rugby followed by an old fashioned knees-up!

Ponteland were full of praise about the way Border Park conducted themselves and have got the club back up-and-running, and planning to head up to Kielder next Christmas.
