Tynedale U13s managed to score an incredible 34 tries on their way to winning the inaugural Ryton Rugby Club Sevens Shield on Saturday.
They stormed to a 55-0 over hosts Ryton, beat Westoe 15-10, and the crushed North Shields 50-5 to set up a semi-final with Alnwick.
Alnwick were swept aside 20-5, before a 35-15 win over Sunderland in the final.
The power and pace of the Tynedale squad was at times irresistible and tries were scored almost at will by Lloyd Cooke (8), Jake Sloan (6) James Jordan and George Foster (5), Reece Main (4) Keiron Self and Harry Oliver (2) and Brad Scanlon and Tom Murray one each with Ed Craney claiming 15 assists!!!
Played on a beautiful spring day, the firm underfoot conditions suited the fast flowing style of the blossoming Tynedale squad.
They were roared on by vociferous support who even managed to drown out a coach load of Sunderland supporters
The continuity and support at times belied the youth of the Tynedale players, the ball more than once passing through every player’s hands and mesmerising the opposition. Shuddering tackling had some supporters wincing, and this more often than not resulted in turn over ball which Tynedale’s speed merchants finished off in style.
The attitude and commitment of all squad members, and those not selected, bodes well for next season.
This was exemplified in the final, when after going three tries down, Tynedale stormed back to score seven unanswered tries.
Sunderland’s coaches were full of praise for the way Tynedale conducted themselves in a powerful display of "never say die" rugby.
