Slaley is selected again to host top seniors event

EUROPE’S top senior golfers will be returning to Slaley Hall next year for a third successive time.Bruce’s bonusMartin wins
The £250,000 De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship – one of only two 72-hole strokeplay events on the European Senior Tour – will be played over the Dave Thomas-designed Hunting Course from June 24-27.
Record senior tour money winner Carl Mason, who cruised to a third PGA title last year with a three stroke victory over South African Christopher Williams, is expected to defend his title against a cast of household names.
Among those likely to figure will be Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam, who over the past two years have proved crowd favourites at Slaley.
Director of golf and leisure for De Vere, Daniel Hodson said: “We are delighted to continue our support of the PGA Seniors Championship by hosting this prestigious event again in 2010.
“We have enjoyed two fantastic years as title sponsor of the senior tour’s flagship event, and it is great that we are able to welcome some of golf’s best known players to the Hunting course again.
“I am sure that we will have another superb showcase of championship golf next June and I am sure the people in the North-East will enjoy having top quality golf on their doorstep again.”
Winner of the Autumn Bowl in Matfen Golf Club ladies’ section was Elma Bruce with a nett 70.
Lil Rainey was second on 71, over the back nine from Barbara Steel
However, Barbara won the October 17 Stableford competition on 34 points four clear of Iris Stafford.
Another October stableford winner was Beth Wright on 39 points.
Lil Rainey was second on 34, with Barbara Steel third on 33.
Eleanor Inglis won the final stableford on 39 on countback from Margaret Wood. Ria Aandewiel was third on 31.
Martin Forster, travelling professional at Bellingham and Allendale Golf Clubs, won the second Pro Series event for the 2010 Order of Merit for the NE/NW PGA at Hartlepool Golf Club with a seven under par score of 63. George Cowan former Bellingham junior member, and now assistant pro asnd Westerhope, was second with 6, from a field of 36 local PGA Pros.
