Mopping up operation pays off for Tony

MEMBERS turned out on Saturday to support Tony Elliott the club captain for Captain’s Day at Tynedale Golf Club. Val again

It was only thanks to the work he put in on the Friday evening and Saturday morning, drying out the greens, that play was able to take place following heavy rains on Thursday and Friday and into Saturday morning.

Geoff Dinning started the competition well in the first group out, winning the nearest the pin on the eighth hole.

Club secretary Charles Marriott finished well, winning the nearest the pin with a second shot on the 18th hole.

Graeme Halkerston won the longest drive on the 14th hole.

Jane Harrison won nearest the pin with the second shot on the 10th hole for the ladies.

Jean Hopkins won nearest the pin on the seventh hole for the ladies.

Mark Davison won the putting competition, with Trevor Hodge winning the chipping competition.

In the main competition Ken Mewse continued his run of form to win the best gross with a score of 71.

Ray Willis won best senior with a nett 65 off full handicap.

The best nett came from John Summerfield with a 63, courtesy of a better back nine than runner-up John Britten.

Tony Roberts was third with 65.

The Charlton Trophy was won by David Stamper with 72-9-63, again over the back nine from Edwin Bell on 75-12-63.

Nicky Bowman was third on 82-17-65.

For the fifth year in succession, Val Pesarra has been crowned Hexham Golf Club ladies’ champion.

The event was played over two days, with the eight players with the best aggregates going through to the knockout stages.

The qualifiers were Val Pesarra, Sue Shaw-Toomey, June Lomax, Viv Younger, Anne Davidson, Sue Crawford, Jane Hall and J. Swan.

In the first semi-final, Val was taken all the way by Viv Younger, who gave the champion a real scare, taking her to the 20th hole, before she won

The other semi was also close, with Sue Crawford, just edging put Sue Shaw-Toomey.

Finals day saw Val produce her A game to take the Challenge Bowl for the fifth consecutive year.

The Bronze Shield, was a one-day competition, and qualifiers for the knockout stages were A. Gilhespy, J. Sayers, Janet Joyce, captain Monica Aitken, Ella. Cram, Joan Dinning, Kathy Coats and N. Mould.

In the semi-finals Monica Aitken beat Gilhespy, and Janet Joyce defeated J. Sayer.

The final was another close match, which saw captain Monica Aitken triumph on the 18th green.

In the July stableford, the silver division winner was Carol Newton with 33 points, with Sue Crawford second on 32 points, on countback from Brenda Carr.

The bronze winner was Pat Borthwick with 37 points, three clear of runner-up Judy Hall with Ella Cram third on 33.
