Lorraine’s poignant success

Successfully defending their title from last year were Lorraine Holmes and Hazel Orwin with an impressive 48 points. What makes it more special is that Jean Jackson was Lorraine's mum.

Runners-up were Wendy Oubridge and Lila Haddow on 40 points, with Margaret Hunter and Irene Noble third on 39.

Three of the 27 entrants carded nett 73s in the Margaret Parker Trophy competition in Prudhoe Golf Club ladies’ section.

After countback,Eleanor Harrison was declared winner on 101-28 -73, with Margaret Kennington second on 87-14-73 and Julie Tully third on 97-24-73.

The monthly stableford at Haltwhistle Golf Club was played under near perfect conditions, and club captain Russ Mitchell won his first competition of the year on 40 points.

Kevin Lamb was second on 39,over the back nine from Phil Reay.

The top nine finishers all had sub-par nett scores in the Mercantile Trophy competition at Tynedale Golf Club. Victory went to Graham Halkerston on 75-11-64, over the back nine from Andy Melstrum on 86-22-64.

Graham Harper was third on 82-17-65, again on countback from C.E. Armstrong on 77-12-65 and D.V. Ballard on 89-24-65.

The Prudential Trophy was won by Alan Pearson on 44 points, with Les Mitchell second on 41, and George Henson third on 40, over the back nine from John Glenwright. Congratulations were due to Terry Lee, who had a hole in one at the par three 17th while playing in a Lee Cup qualifier.

The first qualifying rounds for the Laing Trophy have taken place at Hexham Golf Club.

The best eight net medal scorers go through to the knockout stage, along with the best eight from the second qualifying rounds.

The winner after countback was Joseph Tulip on 80-16-64, edging out James Robinson (73-9-64) second, and Damon Watts (78-14-64) – to follow his net 58 the previous week!

The other five qualifiers were Ian Paxton (69-4-65), Michael Lee (84-18-66), Stephen Riley (71-5-66), Mike Younger (74-8-66) and Peter Harding (76-8-).

Winners of the RVI Foursomes in Hexham Golf Club ladies’ section were Ella Cram and Irene Hinds on 109-30-77.

They will represent Hexham in the final at Percy Woods Golf Club in August.

Runners up were Sylvia Beattie and Kathy Coatsworth on 99-21-78

The Tynedale Golf Club Ladies’ Stableford competition was won by Jean Hopkins with 38 points, five points ahead of runner-up Kate Holder. Nora Murgatroyd was third with 32 points .

Phil Reay registered 44 points to win the Setzer Trophy at Haltwhistle Golf Club. Ian Charlton was second on 42, over the back nine from Gavin Mitchell.

Haltwhistle Golf Club ladies the season with the annual captain v vice captain match, with the captain’s team winning.

The first round of the Christina Simpson Rose Bowl was played on a wonderful warm dry day, with victory going to Carole Mortimore on 92-21-71. Carole also won the April Medal on 95-22-73.

The three-club Floral Trophy competition was won by Helen Ditchfield on 109-35-74.

The complexities of 'countback' were needed to decide all three places in a keenly disputed Allendale Cup competition at Allendale Golf Club.

Brian Hawkins and Dennis Bowling both registered 41 points, but the former had the superior second nine to take the honours.

Geoff Edwards had the best countback of three players who scored 38, edging Richie Rutherford and Russell Handcock for third.
