THE district’s sailing clubs will once again welcome the region’s young sailors to its shores.

Both Kielder Water and Derwent Reservoir will host rounds of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) North East Youth Travellers Series, which got under way earlier this month.

To reduce travel costs, the series is being split into two groups; the Northern League and the Southern League.

The Northern side started with an appearance at Scaling Dam, before sailors head to Kielder Water on April 29.

After rounds at Teesdale, South Shields and Sunderland Yacht Club, the league ends on June 17 at Derwent Reservoir, where host member Peter Owen could defend his title from 2016.

The winners of the Northern League go ahead to the grand final at Ripon SC on July 8, alongside the victors from the Southern League.

Ian Smith, chairman of the RYA North East region, said: “I am very pleased to welcome our Youth Travellers Series on to the water again this year. Sailing and competing at different venues, combating different weather conditions on unfamiliar waters are very important lessons for our young sailors as they prepare to take the next steps towards national competitions.

“Over the past 10 years, the RYA North East Travellers Series has produced several young sailors who have since gone on to represent the UK in national and international competitions.

“We will be providing coaching at each venue to hone the skills of the most experienced, and to help those sailing away from home for the first time.”
