NOT even the appearance of the local weather girl could prevent the harsh weather conditions which met runners at this year’sNatural Ability Fell Race.

BBC Look North presenter Hannah Bayman was on hand to start the run and hand out the prizes at the finishing line for the second annual run around Allenheads.

Yet runners from far and wide battled with inclement October weather, with mist, heavy rain and gusty wind all adding to the challenge of the event, organised to raise funds for charity Natural Ability.

The conditions failed to dampen the spirits of the runners, though, as they admirably battled through the challenging 9.9km course across the Northumberland North Pennines.

Footpaths, bridleways, open moorland and even a fairly deep ford crossing stood in the way, but yet they kept on running through in a saturated state. The main climb of the race was a relentless 570 feet ascent up Byerhope Bank.

Finishing the course first was Colin Donnelly in a time of 41 minutes and 10 seconds, followed by Tynedale Harrier Andy Green and Mark Wade.

The ladies were led home by Allen Valley resident Ruth Bentley in 50.11, which left her 15th in the overall rankings.
