TYNEDALE was well represented at the prestigious English Schools Track and Field Championships, in Birmingham.

Five pupils represented the district as part of the Northumberland team, after qualifying with impressive performances in the earlier rounds.

Main medal hopeful Lewis Cant, who won both the inter-county junior boys' 100m and 200m titles, was absent through injury, with Tynedale teammate Josh McKeown, pipped to the gold by Lewis throughout, performed well to make the final of the 200m.

He was second in his heat with 23.32 seconds, which he followed up with 23.31 in the semi-finals. He finished eighth overall with 23.21 in the final.

On the back of gold in 2015 and bronze in 2016, Max Pearson returned to the English Schools showdown and impressed in the senior boys' 1500m with a time of 4:03.84 for 10th in his heat, even if it wasn't enough to see him progress to the final.

Fellow Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham, pupil Alex Wood missed out on a place in the intermediate boys' equivalent by four seconds, but put in a good display in his heat to record a time of 4:09.52.

In a straight final, Michael Furness was 10th in the intermediate discus competition with a throw on 37.73m.

With a time of 10:30.59, Robyn Bennett finished 13th from 19 competitors in the senior girls' 3,000m.
