MORPETH Hockey‘s fourth team took away the silverware from their trip to Tynedale II - but the trophy they scooped was unwelcome news to their players.
For they were presented with the Maundale Trophy, a manky, old broken bit of hockey stick mounted onto a piece of wood, after losing 4-0 to the Hexham team at the weekend.
The Maundale is up-for-grabs for the losing team when Tynedale and Morpeth’s bottom teams go head-to-head.
And the location of the trophy this year was in serious doubt at half time as the teams went into the break goalless despite both creating a number of chances.
Yet Tynedale grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck after the restart, Sean Cunningham opening the scoring in style as he deflected a smashed ball into the D into the top corner.
Cunningham was on fire and shortly got his second from a short corner, before he completed his hat-trick to put his side well on top.
It was over to 15-year-old prospect Sam Myers to round off the scoring as the centre midfielder capped off another eye-catching performance with a smart finish after his initial effort was kept out by the goalkeeper.
