TYNEDALE moved away from the North East Premier League drop zone as they ran riot in their game with fellow relegation candidates Newcastle University III.

Scoring seven second half goals saw them to an emphatic 9-1 victory against their guests, the victory giving them breathing space over the bottom two teams.

It could have been a different story though as Newcastle looked threatening early on, creating several opportunities to score only to be denied by the determined home goalkeeper Mark Blatherwick who made a number of important saves.

The visitors’ early efforts were quickly forgotten when midfielder Tim Pike tackled their centre back and pushed the ball under the University goalkeeper to break the deadlock.

A second goal for the Hexham side followed soon after when Tom Cant converted winger Jack Beattie’s well-placed cross into the D.

Newcastle rallied before the break and created a number of chances through short corners, but the home defence stood strong to ensure they went into the break two goals to the good.

While Tynedale have become known for their poor second half performances this season, they were at their best at the weekend as they never relented in their pursuit of a high-scoring triumph.

They didn’t need long to extend their lead as Cant tapped in his second from close range following a Tom Scott cross. Three soon became four as Cant fired what he thought would be his hat-trick on goal.

The shot hit the post but was rolled home from a yard out by Beattie.

Tyne continued to attack in numbers and Pike scored his second with a flick into the far corner, moments before Henry Thompson scored a great goal as he struck the ball from the top of the circle.

A first clean sheet of the season looked on the cards, but that was out of the window with 20 minutes to go when Newcastle pounced on a misplaced pass from Liam Ridley to finally beat Blatherwick.

The goal was the beginning of a strong period for the visitors and they had a further goal chalked off, and were denied when Adrian Marrison cleared one off the line.

Tynedale regained their composure and man of the match Cant completed his treble as he turned home the impressive James Rainford’s for his first hat-trick of the campaign.

Tyne’s juniors then got in on the act as they brought the scoring to an end, Sam Bush marked a great first team debut as he scored a fabulous solo effort by beating a number of defenders and then flicking the ball high to the goalkeeper’s left.

Scott then made it seven for the season as he deflected the ball over the Newcastle goalkeeper to make it 9-1 just before the final whistle.
