JUNIOR athletes at Tynedale Harriers were jumping for joy after earning North-East titles at the weekend.

Jack Colmer and Louise Smith brought home golds from the field at the North Eastern Counties Athletic Association Championships, while Olympics prospect Max Pearson added to his long list of accolades with another great success on the track.

The gold rush started for Tynedale on Saturday as Jack, who has just finished his studies at Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School, jumped his way to success in the U20 triple jump with a winning distance of 13.43m, close to two metres further than the runner-up.

It was followed by Louise’s achievements on Sunday, as she left Gateshead International Stadium with two gold medals around her neck.

She was guaranteed first place in the U15 triple jump as the only competitor, but she turned on the style to earn the glory in the long jump as her distance of 4.59m saw her top a competitive field of eight participants.

No stranger to titles, Max headed out a strong field of 10 runners to scoop the U17 800m with a winning time of 1:59.95.

It was a good weekend all round for Tynedale as they scooped a number of medals across the board.

Louise’s younger sister Kate Smith just missed out on gold in the U13 70m hurdles when she was pipped into first place despite a good run of 12.44.

Tom Joyce earned silver in the U20 800m with a time of 1:547.00, while Ovingham Middle School pupil Lewis Cant, representing Blaydon Harriers, was second in the U15 100m with 11.49.

In the field, Max McLeod settled for the runners-up spot in the U15 triple jump with 10.68m.

There was success for the senior members of the team too, with Lea Stephenson second in the 400m with 50.64 and third in the 200m with a time of 23.01.

Teammate Darren Towart also clinched silver as he ran 63.1 in the 300m hurdles.

There was double bronze for Adam Pratt as he ran a time of 4:08.98 in the 1500m and 1:57.95 in the 800m.

Youngster Harry Coldwell was another bronze medal winning athlete as he clinched third in the U13 200m with a time of 27.64.

A couple of Tynedale runners just missed out on medals in the 400m, with Jamie Adams (51.36) fourth in the U20 race and Matthew Cant (55.27), representing Blaydon, finishing in the same position in the U17 equivalent.

Bryn Mordey was unfortunate not to earn a place on the podium too as he was fourth in the U20 100m with 11.75.

Kate Smith was unable to add to her earlier medal as a distance of 5.55m was just short of the required throw needed to earn a medal in the U13 shot putt.

Meanwhile, Tynedale’s Greg Urwin continues to look strong on his comeback from injury after winning gold at this weekend’s British Milers Club.

Posting a season’s best time of 1:52.85 to win the 800m at the Sportcity BMC Grand Prix on Saturday, he is now just a second off qualifying for Olympic trials.

It’s a great return to competition after a four-year lay-off due to injury, and he hopes to sneak a place at the trials which he qualified for back in 2012.

He was unable to make an appearance at the trials though as he sustained a stress fracture in his foot which kept him out of action for nearly four years.

Urwin this week showed great determination for the most recent victory, barging his way to the front of the pack in the final 100m after getting himself in a poor position to attack early on.
