SIX members of Hexham triathlon club One Life Racing made their marks in the Northern Championships Triathlon, held in Lancaster.

The final event of the season saw the Tynedale triathletes battle it out against clubs across the North-East and North-West, claiming two podium finishes in the form of nine-year-old Tabitha Robson and 11-year-old Harry Courtney.

Tabitha was the first to race in the 9-10 years category, and moved up from fifth after the swim to third in the bike which she held on to for bronze.

Harry and Tabitha’s brother Ralph competed in the 11-12 years section and both finished in the top four from the 50 plus competitors.

Harry was second throughout to claim the silver, with Ralph moving up to fourth from sixth out the water to just miss out on a place on the podium.

The weather changed to torrential rain just as eight-year-old Benji Southern prepared to compete in the Tri Starts class but he put in one of the strongest cycling displays to finish in the top 10 of 30.

Clubmates Bethan Nitsch (14) and Rebecca Wren (13) both went out in the 13-14 years category and did the region proud, Bethan taking fourth and Rebecca sixth from a highly competitive field.

While Bethan was impressing in Lancaster, 15-year-old sister Rhianna was putting in a fantastic performance of her own in Yorkshire as she finished second in the youth sprint class at the Brownlee Tri, in Leeds. As well as earning a silver medal, Rhianna was chuffed to meet Olympic heroes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, who hit the news more recently when Alistair sacrificed a chance of a gold medal at the Triathlon World Series by stopping to carry his exhausted brother over the finishing line.
