HEXHAM moved up to second spot in Division Two of the Northumbria Squash League despite falling to back-to-back defeats.

The start of 2017 saw them lose 2-3 (9-15) to Northumberland III, following up their reverse to league leaders Newcastle University III before the Christmas break.

They put up a good fight against Northumberland, but they weren’t able to pick up the points to move further ahead of third placed Primrose.

Tom Ewen was first up for Hexham and was involved in a close encounter with opponent Mark Haigh, the two tied after two games. But Ewen wasn’t able to keep up the pressure and ended up losing 1-2 (9-15, 15-10, 3-15, 3-15).

Adrian Alderton battled bravely against Neil Campbell but lost 0-3 (12-15, 8-15, 14-15).

Damon Watts earned Hexham their first win as he defeated John Laidler 3-1 (15-14, 10-15, 15-7, 15-6).

Yet the game slipped away from them with Paul Satow just edged out 2-3 by Kevin Whitfield after a close affair, despite leading by two (15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 11-15, 14-15).

John Palmer ended things on a high for Hexham as he inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Steve Atkinson (15-11, 15-11, 15-14).
