A GOLDEN goal 10 minutes into extra time prevented Tynedale Ladies making the final of the Northumberland KO Plate.

After an exciting 4-4 draw with Newcastle University IV, the students from the division above clinched it with the late winner.

A number of juniors were drafted in for Tynedale to fill the voids left by the unavailablility of senior players, but they performed brilliantly in a physical game.

Sophie Mitchell scored twice and Becca Glaister and Sarah Martindale got the others to take it to extra time, but Tyne, who have lost captain Sue Crawford for the season finale with Morpeth III on Saturday after taking an undercut ball to the knee, weren’t able to progress to the final.

Tynedale maintained their excellent goal scoring form in the Northumberland B League as they emphatically defeated a depleted Newcastle IV side 7-1.

Becca Glaister opened the scroing after a good move from Immie Pearson and Alison Westworth, with Sophie Mitchell making it 2-0 soon after and Esme Gallagher opening her account before the break.

Sophie hit a further two goals after the break to complete her hat-trick, with Esme joining her on three for the afternoon as time ran down. Iona Hextall was named player of the match.

The future of ladies hockey in Tynedale is in good hands after the U18 girls’ team finished third in the Northumberland Harper League.

Captained by Esme Gallagher, with Eleanor Pearson her vice captain, they played five and won three as they scored 17 and conceded only eight.
