MORE than 75 canoeists headed to the River North Tyne for the annual James Harrison Memorial Slalom.

The nationally ranked Division Two and Three event, in memory of passionate Hexham Canoe Club coach who died three years ago, attracted competitors from across the north, with some even coming from as far as Aberdeen and London.

With participants ranging in age from 10 to 60, the event from Wark Sports Club received hugely positive feedback once again.

Tees Tigers member Ellen Watson was awarded the James Harrison Memorial Trophy for the best performing junior from the North-East over the two days.

James’ daughter Abbie looks set to follow in his footsteps as she acted as one of the gate judges over the weekend, checking to see whether competitors had made a clear run or gained penalty points for touching or missing the gate.

Event organiser Mike Woodhouse said: “This event could not take place without support from Wark Sports Club, Wark Angling Club, landowners, Hexham Canoe Club and the volunteers from as far as Sheffield and Doncaster to help with the set-up and judging.”
