FRESH from his victory against the current world champion, a former professional created a new record in Hexham.

One of the region‘s best ever snooker players, John Astley, made history at the town’s Albert Edward Club by making a record breaking break of 124, beating the previous high score by some margin.

Astley was in town for an exhibition game at the club, coming just weeks after beating reigning Snooker World Champion Stuart Bingham by three frames at a recent exhibition match in Gateshead.

The snooker ace took on two of the best amateur players across Tynedale in Martin Forster and John Woodley, and made several other breaks of 50 which included a score of 102 and the brilliant 124.

He came within inches of bettering the score but only just missed a tricky black to the middle pocket to prevent him stretching it to 131.
