AN EXTENDED route will be rolled out as part of the popular Tynedale Jelly Race this year.

In addition to the traditional 10-mile run, organisers Tynedale Harriers have introduced a 15-mile course for North-East runners wanting to go further.

The idea behind the new race is to prepare people planning a marathon later in the year, such as Kielder, the opportunity to get a long run under their belt by pushing them further than a half marathon.

The route promises to be a challenging one too, taking in the hills around the run’s new base of Hexham Racecourse.

A change of location occurred last year when the Harriers moved it to the racecourse, and the 10-mile run will return to the venue alongside the 15 miler.

The route is a circular one to avoid logistical nightmares for the runners getting from point to point.

Hundreds of runners from across the region have signed up for the races, which start at 11am on Sunday, September 18, which has become well-known for the dishing out of jelly and sandwiches at the finishing point.

Kim Bluck, of Tynedale Harriers, said: “Last year we changed the venue to the racecourse amd introduced a challenging new 10-mile route, making the most of Hexhamshire’s stunning scenery. This year we are adding a 15-mile option which will be ideal for people preparing for an autumn marathon such as Kielder.”

At last year’s event, husband and wife team Tadele Geremew and Justina Heslop, both of Elswick Harriers, won the men’s and women’s races.
