A SENSATIONAL season on the track by a promising Tynedale Harrier has been recognised.

For Dan Joyce, who stormed to double national gold over 800m, was prsented with the Tyneside Athletics League Colin Miller Shield at the recent Start Fitness North Eastern Grand Prix Awards.

The award is the top prize for athletes in the region, and past winners include Richard Kilty and Olympian Laura Weightman.

A panel of judges voted the teenager, who lives in Slaley, as the recipient of the award after a remarkable breakthrough season which culminated in him breaking the England Athletics U15 championship record when he blitzed his way to gold wearing the black vest of Tynedale in August.

It capped a brilliant year for Dan after he took the English Schools Athletics Association title when representing Durham as a pupil at Blaydon's St Thomas More school.
