CHILDREN in Ponteland were visited by British Paralympic athlete Craig McCann in recognition of their enthusiasm towards PE.

Darras Hall First School welcomed wheelchair fencer McCann as pupil Josh Gabra, and Leigha Atkinson from Cramlington's Beaconhill Primary, were highly commended in the Souluxe Sporting Promise awards for their passion for PE and School Sport.

While there, he talked about his sporting achievements which included an appearance at London 2012 before he ran through some sports drills.

McCann said: "This just shows the powerful part that sport can play in the lives of young people. It was fantastic to meet with Leigha, Josh and the other pupils today and see their enthusiasm.”
