OVINGHAM Middle School has produced more county champions as their Year 8 athletes ran away with the title.

A little over a week after the Year 7 boys won the Northumberland Schools five-a-side football competiton, the team of Matthew Jackson, Sam Jolly, Philip Lloyd, Lewis Cant, Joe Glenwright and Archie Leonard stormed the Northumberland School Games sportshall indoor athletics final to finish well ahead of the rest of the pack.

To qualify for the Morpeth event, Ovingham finished top of the Tynedale event in Hexham and went on to face the five other district champions from across the county.

And they were head and shoulders above the opposition as they failed to win just four events of the many track and field events held on the day, ending with a total of 166 points.

PE teacher Reece Davies said: “They are an amazing bunch because most of them are members of athletics clubs, and these clubs are a massive help to schools sport. Even when I was a pupil at Highfield, Ovingham had a strong athletics team to carry them through and it has long beaten other schools.

“The fact these lads won by such a high margin means they could have sat out five events and still won, and that shows just how good they were.

“It’s such a shame there is no regional finals for county champions as I think they could go on and possibly become North-East champions.”
