OPPONENTS 70 years apart went head-to-head in the Tynedale Table Tennis League.

Long-serving Newton member Edwin Symm was coaxed out of retirement for the recent match-up against Matfen, who fielded upcoming, 11-year-old prospect Ferg Kilsby.

It was an entertaining match-up against two players at the opposite end of their playing careers, with Ferg securing the victory which contributed to Matfen’s overall success.

Meanwhile, Ferg’s father Chris contributed as Matfen Centurions jumped to third in the Northumbria Division One table as a result of back-to-back 7-3 victories.

He won two games as they saw off the challenge of Tyne Valley rivals Riding Mill B , with teammates Malcolm Aitchison and Neil Forsyth matching the feat. The latter two also won their doubles, with Andrew Firth winning two games and Maurice Cheek one for Mill.

It was a repeat performance as in the earlier 7-3 triumph over The Mount C, the same winning pattern earning Matfen the points.

They are 10 points off second placed Newton A who kept up their title charge with a whitewash of Cramlington Reivers.

John Russell, Graeme Bell and Craig Fryer all won all three of their singles, with Russell and Bell also taking the doubles for maximum points.

Matfen Senators enjoyed bragging rights over Matfen Tribunes when they met in Division Two.

Alex Holliday won all of his singles games and his doubles with David Swan, who won one game individually. Stephen Oxley contributed the other two points in the 7-3 victory.

For Tribunes, Keith Hodges won two games and Peter Seago one.

Matfen Cohorts went down 8-2 to Cramlington Lions in Division Three, Mark Perrin winning one of his singles and the doubles when paired with Richard Rayfield.
