NEWTON A will potentially face a title decider in their final game of the season in two weeks time.

They currently top Division One by a margin of 20 points, but second placed Mount have two games in hand - before the teams meet in what could be a crucial game on April 19.

But it looks like the championship belongs to Newton as they recorded a 14th victory of the season, seeing off the tough challenge of Tynedale rivals Matfen Centurions 6-4.

John Russell won all three of his singles and David Lucas two, with Russell combining with Robert Lawson to win what proved a key doubles match-up.

For Matfen, who ended the season in fourth spot, Chris Kilsby won two games and Malcolm Aitchison and Neil Forsyth one each.

While Newton B have the Handicap Cup semi-finals tie to look forward to, they ended their league campaign with back-to-back defeats. Lawson and David Lucas won one game each, and Lawson and Chas Robertson the doubles, but it wasn’t enough as they went down 7-3 to Mitford B.

They were then unable to do their clubmates a favour as they lost 8-2 to The Mount B, Lawson and Lucas again winning one game.

Matfen Senators just missed out on the Division Two title despite winning their final game against Old England Fatts 6-4.

Alex Holliday won all three of his singles and Stephen Oxley two, with Holliday and David Swan enjoying victory in the doubles.

Wins for Nigel Tree and Peter Seago, who also triumphed in their doubles, were in consolation for Matfen Tribunes as they lost 7-3 to Birtley.

Newton C finished firmly in midtable in Division Four as a concluding 5-5 draw with Cramlington Knights secured fifth spot.

Raymond Lazareto and David Neal won two games each, with John Morgan winning one.

Riding Mill A defeated Byker A 6-4 in the Premier Division, their points coming courtesy of wins for Andrew Firth (2), Maurice Cheek (2) and Mark O’Connor (1), with O’Connor and Cheek triumphing in the doubles.
