EN GARDE. A fencing club is in the pipeline for Tynedale.

A taster session is being run by British Fencing in conjunction with Active Northumberland to gauge interest in starting up a club for the district.

On Sunday, September 20, at Wentworth Leisure Centre, in Hexham, adults aged 16 and over are encouraged to join in with a demonstration with a British Fencing officer.

If there is interest in the session, Active Northumberland will then work to qualify coaches and attract members.

British Fencing is keen to grow participation in the sport, and has identified Tynedale as an area where it thinks it could take off.

Active Northumberland‘s sports development manager for West Northumberland, Kathie Keady, said: “This is something people have mentioned they would like to do, so if they are prepared to come and give it a go and become a coach then we will start up a club.

“There‘s no real equivalent to fencing in the area, and we hope it will appeal to people not engaged in team sports and who are looking for something different.”
