TAKING time out of their usual schedule, rowers from the successful Queen Elizabeth High School, in Hexham, again shone on the national stage.

A number of their crews triumphed as the club entered a record number of 51 rowers into the 50km Lincoln to Boston Marathon.

Nick Ryan continued his impressive run in the single scull as he set a new J17 record of four hours and 17 minutes, a record set by former QE pupil Michael Ronan in 2009.

The J16 boys quad of Harry Andersen, Tom Smith, Christian Chomse and Tom Archer were moved up into the senior IM3 category due to lack of opposition, but that didn’t faze them as they took the title.

Joining them in the gold was the J15 coxed quad of Andrew Howard, Abe Parkin, Tom Ludman, Ben Wilkinson and cox Andrew Smith.

Completing the success for QE, Tom Barnes joined three rowers from Chester-le-Street to win the J18 coxless quad race.

There was success for QE River Tyne neighbours Hexham too, the mixed IM3 coxless quad of Simon Aitkenhead, Beverley Beattie, Bruce Howorth and Elizabeth Waterman holding off a strong challenge from Doncaster to secure the glory.
