A PONTELAND teenager got her skates on to earn national success.

Kitty Jones (below), a pupil at the town’s high school, claimed a bronze medal from a recent national ice skating championships, held in Bradford.

Having become interested in the sport after attending a friend’s birthday party, she decided to join Whitley Bay Ice Skating Club where she visits five times a week.

She is scorching on the ice too as, in addition to finishing third in the Bradford event, Kitty came fourth from a field of 28 in her first international event at London’s Lee Valley.

With the sport judged on technical abilities, such as spins and jumps, Kitty (14) has to perfect her technique, and she is doing just that as she prepares for her next big competition at Murrayfield, in Edinburgh, in May.
