THE push by organisers to get more children active paid off with more than 100 juniors at this year’s SCA Prudhoe Miners‘ Race.

The event, organised by Run Northumberland and with the backing of SCA Prudhoe Mill and Prudhoe Town Council, saw 94 tiny runners complete the mini 1.5km race and 18 participants in the junior 3km run.

It all added to the spectacle as the main adult 10km race attracted 140 runners from across the North-East, as well as visitors from twin town Mitry Mory!

The girls from Tynedale Harriers impressed in the U17 junior race, 12-year-old Rosin Lally (14:25) just ahead of clubmates Jasmine Couchman (14:43) and Keely French (14:59).

They finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively overall, the race won by Gateshead’s James Morris (12:43) ahead of brother Harry (13:24).

It was the mini event which was more populated though, and there were many entries from local schools St Matthew’s, Prudhoe West and Highfield Middle, while Tynedale Harriers and Hexham‘s One Life Racing triathlon club also had representatives.

In a time of 07:20, Birtley AC’s Christopher Perkins recorded the quickest time with Adam Pearon-McCoull (07:38) runner-up and James Caulfield (07:39) a close third.

Erin Keeler-Clarke (07:40), of Durham City Harriers, was first girl home and she was followed over the line by Abigail Leiper (07:42). Zoe French (08:12) was third.

There was home success for Lee Bennett in the main event as the Wylam resident, representing Elswick Harriers, completed the course in a winning time of 34 minutes and 11 seconds.

Making up the top three was Neil Byrne (35:50) and third placed Adam Smith (36:33), the fastest senior.

Sunderland Harrier Michelle Avery (42:17) kept two local runners off top spot in the female race.

Allen Valley Strider Ruth Bentley (42:50) finished in second and Prudhoe resident Sarah Davies (43:26), an Elswick Harrier, was third.
