AN INJURY to Corbridge Centurions’ classy fly half Harry Woods proved a key moment of their game with Horden and Peterlee II.

As his side had built up a 31-7 lead, they were down to 14 men for the final half hour and the Centurions missed his kicking prowess as their hosts managed to claim an unlikely victory.

While Horden scored an early try to lead 7-0, Corbridge stormed back and left their hosts behind during an excellent first half performance.

Edd Cawthorn drove well to play in Adam Binks to get the Corbridge ball rolling, with No. 8 Cawthorn again setting up the next try by recycling the ball to Andy Harvey to feed Arthur Guest for a second score.

Another fine move involving Binks and Harvey then saw U18 player Jack obson finish well, with Jake Sloan setting up Cawthorn as the Tynedale side ran riot.

Sloan, who supported and ran well throughout, secured a deservewd try of his own following good work by Nathan Washington and Charlie Harvey.

Woods converted one of the tries but a pulled thigh muscle meant Robbie Nixon had to take over kicking duties, and he popped over a couple of conversions confidently.

The eventual loss of Woods to injury changed the game in the last 30 minutes and a combination of fine kicking by the Horden fly half and poor decision making by the visitors saw them overturn the deficit to go 33-31 in front.

The visitors were still fighting for everything, though, and took a late lead when good driving work from Ed Craney and props Matt Robinson and Scott Kelly led to a penalty.

A quick tap led to Cawthorn running in his second try of the game, with Nixon adding the extras.

With time against them, Horden rallied and turned over possession from the kick off before driving down field for a try, which was crucially converted to earn the home side the victory.

Corbridge Centurions travel to Hartlepool Rovers on Saturday with a place in the Candy Cup final up-for-grabs.
