THE reward for another phenomenal season for a promising teenager is a call-up by England Golf.

Joe Robson (15), who lives in Wylam but plays his golf at Hexham, has again been selected for the sporting body’s U16 north region squad after a barnstorming year.

One year on from capturing the U14 title, Joe impressed to lift this year’s Northumberland U16 strokeplay trophy back in June. And he has also played an integral part in helping Hexham Golf Club make the national final of the England Inter Club Junior Teams tournament as regional champions.

The Prudhoe High School pupil, who plays off a three handicap, is one of eight people from across the North chosen for the winter training programme, his first of eight sessions this term starting this weekend at Matfen Hall.

He said: “I had a slow start to the season but a better finish, so I’m looking to try get my game ready for the season and develop it for the competitions coming up. I’m really pleased with the regional selection and it’s a good place to train with all the other youngsters who become your mates, and it’s good to see where you are with some really good players in the north.

“I was pleased with winning the county strokeplay and I played well in that, and I think the season went all right.”

Goals for the coming season are qualification for the English U16 McGregor Trophy, and retaining the county U16 title.
