WORLD class cyclists will be greeted in Northumberland by a sea of red and yellow - with the help of the general public.

Northumberland County Council is asking for residents, businesses and community groups to get involved in a project to turn the county the colours of the Northumberland flag ahead of the upcoming Tour of Britain.

On Monday, September 4, the second leg of this year's prestigious cycling series will start from Kielder Water and Forest Park before heading through villages such as Bellingham, Otterburn and Elsdon on its way to the finishing line at Blyth.

To celebrate the return of the race to Northumberland after a very successful stint in 2015, the county council is keen to get the public involved in the event and wants people to dress the route in distinctive red and yellow colours.

Hexham East councillor Cath Homer, the cabinet member responsible for culture, arts and leisure, said: "The Tour of Britain is the UK's largest professional cycle race, and is broadcast all around the world, so it is a great chance to showcase the county as a fabulous place to visit and cycle in.

"We want to add a real splash of the Northumberland red and yellow colours to the race route, and would really like local residents to help us by getting creative and getting involved."
