FOLLOWING a titanic battle over 36 holes, Hexham Golf Club’s men‘s champion was crowned.

Ali Harris kept his composure to see off the challenge of Martin Coup, the two players playing consistent golf throughout after setting a high standard with birdies on the first.

Despite falling three holes behind, Coup stormed back to level the match after 18 and the lead exchanged hands from then on in.

It was level from holes 32 to 36 until Harris holed par on the final hole to edge out his competitor by just one stroke.

There was a record equalling seventh win for ladies’ champion Val Pesarra as, in an excellent game with finalist Val Robinson, she eventually sealed the match 5 and 4. She continued her great form to scoop the championship at Slaley Hall too.

The Bronze Shield for lady players with a handicap of 21+ turned into an endurance test between established player, Sue Lishman and relative newcomer Suzanne Phillips. After both players missed winning opportunities, the match went to a sudden death play-off with Lishman prevailing at the fourth extra hole.

There was a close contest in the Intermediates final between George Noble and Paul Shrimpton, the latter going into the 18th with a narrow hole lead before winning it to take the match 2up.

In the men’s Alpha final, David Fletcher and Connor Brown played some good golf before Fletcher pulled clear by four after 14 as he went on to close out the match 5 and 3.

Martin Hassett led by four by the ninth hole in the Omega category, before being pegged back to level terms by final opponent David Johnstone. Hassett then took a one shot lead into the 18th and he took the match 2up.
