THE dates of Tynedale Harriers’ two popular races have both changed.

Due to the unavailability of Ovingham Middle School, the headquarters for both the Tynedale 10K and Tynedale Jelly Race, the sports group have had to find alternative dates.

Instead of Wednesday, July 5, the 10K will be held on Tuesday, June 27, while the iconic jelly race has switched from August to Sunday, September 24.

The latter is back in its traditional venue in and around Ovingham after spending two years at Hexham Racecourse.

The 10-mile route around the racecourse proved too much of a challenge for some runners, especially the addition of a 15 miler last year.

Harriers chairman Ian Brown said: “ The change to the route for the 10 mile is because the popularity of the racecourse route was limited because it was just so hilly!

“Some runners loved the challenge but there just wasn’t enough of them to cover the costs and generate funds for the club.

“However, we are sure there is still substantial demand for a fast, 10-mile road race as there are very few of this distance in the calendar.”

The jelly race, so called because runners enjoy jelly and sandwiches at the finish, has also been chosen by North East Counties Athletic Association as their 10- mile championship so will attract some of the best runners in the North-East.

The 10K route remains the same as it goes from the middle school to the finish line at Ovingham Bridge.
