HALTWHISTLE ended the dominance of Newcastle teams by scooping the Northumberland Challenge Cup.

After a fantastic day of bowls at Alnwick, the men from the west of the county rose to the top and eliminated the big guns from the city to pull off the coup. The success even eclipsed the club’s 5-2 win against Allen Valley in the West Tyne League!

The West Tyne league was effectively wrapped up last week when Hexham House thrashed league leaders Hexham Elvaston 7-0. Although two of the four rinks were close, there was no arguing with the result which now sees House well in front.

Elvaston have now slipped to third place, but have a game in hand over Haltwhistle, who moved ahead of them by beating Prudhoe 6-1. This match was closer on shots (66-50) than the points score suggests, as was Allen Valley’s 65-56 win over Alston.

Elvaston had no Nines match because their opponents called off but, with thanks to House beating second-placed Heaton Victoria, remain top of the table with games in hand.

There was good news from the ladies in that Jean Allen and Betty Boaden won the Northumberland section of the national over-55 pairs, while Jean made the county final of the 4-wood singles.
